10 developer tool free tiers were removed in Q1 2026. 33 more were reduced or restructured. Here’s what changed and what’s still free.
March 2026 saw an unprecedented wave of free tier removals in a single month: Postman killed team collaboration on its free plan, LocalStack discontinued its open-source Community Edition (212 points on Hacker News), Brave Search API replaced its free tier with metered billing, HCP Terraform is ending its legacy free plan March 31, and Windsurf replaced credits with hard quotas while raising prices 33%.
But it’s not all erosion. Cloudflare expanded its startup program to $250K, Terragrunt Scale launched a free tier specifically to capture HCP Terraform refugees, and GitHub Copilot went free. The pattern: some vendors are removing free tiers, while competitors swoop in to capture displaced developers.

Open-source Community Edition discontinued

Companies that built on open-source are closing the source. MinIO archived its repo. LocalStack killed Community Edition. HashiCorp's BSL license change (2023) continues to ripple.

Flexible credit systems are being replaced by fixed monthly quotas. This makes 'free' more predictable but less useful — you can't burst when you need to.

APIs that were free for years are adding billing. Some add credits, some go straight to metered billing. The $0 API era is ending.
