X (Twitter) API Paywall

X eliminated its free API tier entirely in February, moving to $200/month for basic access. The free tier had already been gutted in 2023, but the complete removal locked out thousands of bot developers, researchers, and side projects. Combined with the pricing model change (per-post charges), X completed its transformation from the most developer-friendly social platform to one of the most hostile.
Brave eliminated its free search API plan (5,000 queries/month) in February, replacing it with metered billing at $5/1,000 requests. For developers building search-powered tools and AI agents, this was a blow — Brave was one of the last independent search APIs with meaningful free access. The timing coincided with Google further restricting Programmable Search Engine queries.
MinIO, the most popular S3-compatible object storage server, switched from Apache 2.0 to a proprietary license in February 2026. Self-hosted users now need a commercial license for production use. This followed a pattern seen with Redis (RSALv2/SSPLv1), Elasticsearch (SSPL), and MongoDB (SSPL), but hit particularly hard because MinIO was foundational infrastructure for thousands of self-hosted deployments.

As of 2026-05-13, DigitalOcean's startup credits exclude Dedicated and Serverless Inference, third-party AI models, Paperspace Machines, Cloudways and Bare Metal GPUs as well as GPU Droplets and H100 GPU products, the two exclusions its page stated before.
