Google no longer sells standalone Google Developer Program Premium ($299/year or $24.99/month). On personal (@gmail.com) accounts, annual plans stopped renewing after March 30, 2026 and monthly plans after June 30, 2026; Premium on Workspace accounts did not change. Its Google Cloud credits and Firebase Studio workspaces now come with Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) and Google AI Ultra (from $99.99/mo) on personal Google Accounts. Premium's 1:1 consultations, certification voucher and unlimited Google Skills access did not carry over.
The headline loss: Cloud credits drop 76% for annual subscribers who move to AI Pro. GDP Premium's annual plan included $500 a year in Google Cloud credits, and its monthly plan $45 a month. AI Pro includes $10/mo ($120/yr). The closest match to the old credit is Ultra 5x at $99.99/mo with $40/mo ($480/yr), about 4x Premium's $299/year.
Who's most affected: Indie developers, students, and small teams who relied on GDP Premium for cheap GCP access and Gemini API usage. The AI Pro tier is adequate for light Gemini users, but the Cloud credits reduction is significant for anyone running workloads on GCP.
The silver lining: Most per-service free tiers still apply: Cloud Run, BigQuery, Cloud Build (2,500 build-minutes a month) and Firestore on Firebase's Spark plan. Cloud Storage for Firebase is the exception: since February 3, 2026 it needs the Blaze plan.
Google announced the transition in January 2026. Here's the timeline:
January 27, 2026 — Announcement
Google announces GDP Premium is being folded into AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions. Developer benefits move from a standalone program to consumer AI products.
March 30, 2026 — Annual renewals end
Annual standalone Premium on @gmail.com accounts stopped auto-renewing. Benefits ran to the end of the billing period, and Cloud credits expire a year after they were granted.
June 30, 2026 — Monthly renewals end
Monthly standalone Premium ($24.99) on @gmail.com accounts stopped auto-renewing. Workspace accounts keep existing Premium subscriptions. No new standalone sign-ups are accepted.
Ongoing — Per-service free tiers
Cloud Run, BigQuery and Cloud Build keep their free tiers. Firebase's Spark plan lost Cloud Storage on February 3, 2026. The free Google Developer Program (non-Premium) continues.

Heavy GCP Users
Anyone using the full $500/year credits for Cloud Run, Compute Engine, or GKE loses the most. AI Pro's $120/yr covers a fraction of the same workloads.
Students & Learners
Eligible U.S. college students aged 18+ get Google AI Pro free for a year (redeem by December 31, 2026; a payment method is required, and it then renews at $19.99/month). Otherwise, Oracle's Always Free tier and AWS's free plan cost nothing.
Gemini API Users
AI Pro gives expanded access to Gemini 3.1 Pro and Deep Research in the Gemini app. The Gemini API keeps a free tier of its own; check Google's pricing page for your model.
Firebase-Only Devs
Spark (free) still covers Auth, Firestore and Hosting, but not Cloud Storage since February 3, 2026. If you only used GDP Premium for Firebase, you don't need AI Pro.

Best strategy: Oracle Cloud's Always Free tier (Arm Ampere A1 at 2 OCPUs and 12 GB total across 1-2 VMs) never expires, so it outlasts any credit grant GDP Premium ever made. AWS's free plan and Azure's free account add more, but AWS's plan closes within 6 months, sooner if its credits run out, and Azure's 12 months of free services need a move to pay-as-you-go within 30 days. GDP Premium's annual plan included a $50 credit a year for Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. These providers offer free API tiers of their own.
Context — Gemini API free tier reduction: Google cut the Gemini API free tier's rate limits on 2025-12-06. Gemini 2.5 Flash went from 10 requests a minute and 250 a day to 5 and 20, and Gemini 2.5 Pro went to no free requests. Google's rate-limits page stopped listing free-tier limits the same day. Firebase's Spark (free) plan was not part of GDP Premium, but it lost Cloud Storage on February 3, 2026. If you're re-evaluating your stack, these BaaS alternatives offer competitive free tiers.
Is AI Pro or AI Ultra worth it compared to direct Google Cloud pay-as-you-go?
AI Pro ($19.99/mo) — Break-Even Analysis
You pay $19.99 and get $10 in Cloud credits. Net cost for non-credit benefits: $9.99/mo. The other $9.99 buys expanded Gemini 3.1 Pro access and the rest of the AI Pro bundle, including 5 TB of storage. Worth it only if you actively use Gemini beyond the free tier limits. Most developers can use Groq or OpenRouter free tiers instead.
AI Ultra (from $99.99/mo) — Break-Even Analysis
Ultra 5x costs $99.99 and includes $40 in Cloud credits: $59.99/mo for its other benefits. Ultra 20x costs $199.99 and includes $100: $99.99/mo. Only makes sense for heavy Gemini use. For most developers, this is dramatically overpaying.

Oracle Cloud (compute) + AWS (services) + Groq (LLM API) + Firebase Spark (BaaS) + GitHub Actions (CI/CD) = $0/month within free limits.
