🚀 Hosting & Deployment

Recommended Vercel Hobby active

The creators of Next.js. Zero-config deployments with automatic edge optimization, ISR, middleware, and server components. Hobby plan: 100 GB Fast Data Transfer, 1M function invocations and 4 hours Fluid Active CPU a month; builds included. Preview deploys on every PR. The only platform with day-one support for every Next.js feature.

Hobby plan, $0 a month, for non-commercial personal use only. Includes 100 GB Fast Data Transfer, 1M Edge Requests, 1M Function Invocations, 4 hours Fluid Active CPU, 360 GB-hrs Fluid Provisioned Memory, 1 GB Blob…

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 100 GB bandwidth/month or need commercial use (Hobby plan is non-commercial). Railway's Hobby plan is $5/month including $5 of usage, with no commercial restriction. Netlify gives 100 GB bandwidth with serverless functions. Cloudflare Pages has unlimited bandwidth but limited Next.js feature support.
⚠️ Why not Heroku: No free tier since November 2022. Why not Render: Free tier spins down after 15 minutes of inactivity — cold starts of about one minute kill the Next.js experience.

🗄️ Database

Recommended Neon Free active

Serverless Postgres with branching — perfect for Next.js server components and API routes. Free plan: 1 GB of storage and 100 CU-hours per project, up to 100 projects and 20 GB of storage in total, scales to zero after 5 minutes idle. Neon's serverless driver (@neondatabase/serverless) works in Vercel Edge Functions where traditional Postgres clients cannot.

Serverless Postgres with branching — free tier includes 100 CU-hours/month per project, 1 GB of Postgres storage per project (20 GB total across all projects), up to 100 projects, 10 branches per project, Neon Auth (60K…

No longer a free-tier pick: PlanetScale — retired.

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 1 GB of storage or need always-on connections. Supabase offers 500 MB storage with built-in auth and realtime but pauses after 7 days inactive. Turso gives 5 GB total storage across edge locations.
⚠️ Why not MongoDB Atlas: 512 MB storage is workable, but Postgres is the better fit for Next.js's server-side patterns (Prisma, Drizzle, raw SQL in server components).

🔐 Authentication

Recommended Clerk Hobby active

Best-in-class Next.js DX with @clerk/nextjs SDK, middleware integration, and pre-built UI components. Free tier: 10,000 monthly active users, unlimited social logins, email/password, MFA, organizations, and webhooks. Drops right into App Router with zero auth boilerplate.

Drop-in auth with 50K monthly retained users free, unlimited apps

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 10,000 MAU ($0.02/MAU overage — $1,800/month at 100K MAU). Auth0 offers 25,000 MAU free but with fewer built-in UI components. Supabase Auth gives 50,000 MAU with the cheapest scale-up ($0.00325/MAU). For maximum free ceiling, WorkOS AuthKit offers 1M MAU free for basic auth.
⚠️ Why not NextAuth/Auth.js: Self-hosted and free at any scale, but you build every UI yourself and manage session storage. Good if you want full control; Clerk if you want to ship fast.

📦 Object Storage

Recommended Cloudflare R2 Free active

Zero egress fees — the standout differentiator. 10 GB storage, 1 million Class A operations, 10 million Class B operations per month. S3-compatible API means any S3 SDK works. Perfect for Next.js image uploads, user files, and static assets that would cost a fortune on S3 egress.

Object storage with zero egress fees — 10 GB storage, 1M writes, 10M reads/month free.

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 10 GB storage. At scale, R2 saves dramatically: 1 TB stored + 10 TB egress costs ~$15/month on R2 vs ~$925/month on S3 (the egress tax). Backblaze B2 offers 10 GB free and free egress up to 3x what you store, no CDN required. Tigris gives 5 GB with S3 compatibility and global distribution.
⚠️ Why not AWS S3: new accounts get no free storage, only Free plan credits that last at most 6 months; then storage costs $0.023/GB-month. Bandwidth is the part that does not expire — AWS S3 gives every account its first 100 GB of internet egress each month free, on an account of any age — so at 100 GB egress/month S3 bills $0 for bandwidth, the same as R2. Past that S3 charges $0.09/GB and R2 still charges $0.

✉️ Email & Transactional

Recommended Resend Free active

Modern developer-first email API built for React. 3,000 emails/month, 100/day on free tier. The react-email library lets you build email templates with JSX — same component model as your Next.js app. TypeScript SDK, webhook delivery tracking, and domain verification.

Developer-first email API — 3K emails/month free (100/day cap), 3 domains, 1K marketing contacts/month, 5 AI credits, 30-day data retention

No longer a free-tier pick: Amazon SES — free tier removed.

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 3,000 emails/month or 100/day. Brevo gives 300 emails/day (9,000/month) with no monthly cap and includes marketing automation. Mailtrap is best for testing with virtual inboxes.
⚠️ Why not SendGrid: Free tier removed May 2025. The Twilio acquisition killed the developer-first positioning. Resend is the spiritual successor.

🐛 Monitoring & Error Tracking

Recommended Sentry Developer active

Developer tier: 5,000 errors/month, 10,000 performance transactions, 50 session replays, 1 GB attachments. First-class Next.js SDK with automatic instrumentation for API routes, server components, middleware, and client-side errors. Source map support for production debugging.

Developer tier: 1 user, 5K errors/month, 5M spans/month, 50 session replays, 5GB application logs, 1GB attachments

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 5,000 errors/month or need more than 1 team member. BetterStack combines uptime monitoring (10 monitors) with incident management. Grafana Cloud offers 10,000 series metrics + 50 GB logs + 50 GB traces. Highlight.io bundles 500 sessions + 1,000 errors + 1M logs on free tier.
⚠️ Why not Datadog: Free tier has only 1-day metric retention — practically unusable for debugging. The per-host pricing model gets expensive fast: ~$5,500/month at 100 hosts.

⚙️ CI/CD

Recommended GitHub Actions Free active

2,000 minutes/month on free tier for public repos (unlimited) and private repos. Native GitHub integration means CI runs on every push and PR. Next.js apps typically build in 1-3 minutes — that's 660-2,000 builds/month. Matrix testing, caching, and reusable workflows included.

Free CI/CD for public repos (unlimited minutes). Private repos: 2,000 min/mo GitHub-hosted runners, 500 MB artifact storage, 10 GB cache/repo. Self-hosted runners remain free — planned $0.002/min charge was postponed…

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 2,000 minutes/month on private repos or need GPU/ARM runners. Railway auto-deploys from git with zero CI config. Vercel's built-in CI handles the deploy pipeline — you only need GitHub Actions for tests and linting. GitLab CI offers 400 minutes/month on free tier.

📊 Analytics

Recommended PostHog Free active

1 million events/month free — includes product analytics, 5,000 session replays, feature flags (1M requests), A/B testing, and surveys. Replaces 3-4 separate tools. Self-hostable. PostHog's Next.js SDK integrates with App Router and supports both client and server-side tracking.

Product analytics — 1M events/month, 5K session replays, 1M feature flag requests, 100K error events, A/B testing. No credit card required

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 1M events/month. Plausible CE is self-hosted with unlimited everything — privacy-first with no cookies. Umami is another lightweight self-hosted option. Vercel Analytics is free on Hobby but limited to basic web analytics.
⚠️ Why not Google Analytics: Free at any scale but heavy, privacy-invasive (requires cookie consent banners in EU), and the GA4 migration broke many workflows. PostHog gives you more features with better privacy.

⏱️ Background Jobs & Cron

Recommended Inngest Hobby active

Free tier: 25,000 function runs/month with event-driven architecture, retries, scheduling, and step functions. First-class Next.js integration — define functions in your API routes, Inngest handles queuing, retries, and scheduling. No infrastructure to manage.

Serverless workflow orchestration — 50K executions, 500K events ingested, 5 concurrent steps, 500 MB span data ingested, 100K queue depth, 50 realtime connections

When you'll outgrow it: When you exceed 25,000 runs/month. QStash (Upstash) offers 1,000 messages/day for simple HTTP-based job queuing. Trigger.dev gives 50,000 runs/month with a more code-first approach. Vercel Cron Jobs are free on Hobby for scheduled tasks (1/day minimum interval) but don't handle event-driven workflows.

The first paid upgrade: Database (Neon Launch, usage-based, no monthly minimum) + Hosting (Vercel Pro $20/mo) unlocks commercial use, Postgres beyond 1 GB at $0.35/GB-month, 1 TB bandwidth, and faster builds. Everything else — auth (10K MAU), email (3K/mo), monitoring (5K errors), analytics (1M events), storage (10 GB R2), search (10K records), jobs (25K runs), CI (2,000 min) — stays free well past your first 1,000 users.

Architecture: How It Fits Together

A typical Next.js SaaS connects these layers:

User → Vercel (Next.js hosting + edge) → Neon (Postgres via serverless driver) → Clerk (auth middleware + session) → R2 (file uploads via presigned URLs) → Resend (transactional emails from API routes) → Inngest (background jobs triggered by events) → PostHog (analytics + feature flags) → Sentry (error tracking + performance) → Algolia (search index, synced from Postgres) GitHub → GitHub Actions (CI: tests + lint) → Vercel (CD: auto-deploy)

All connections use HTTPS APIs — no VPCs, no SSH tunnels, no complex networking. Each service is independently replaceable.
